Somewhere in the Mediterranean on a Bavaria 50 yacht,  between Sicily and Salina, with barely any 3G signal, I’m loyally writing for you. Again i publish my photos from a trip while already on a different trip, probably confusing you all. But hey, that’s the life of a traveller isn’t it? Or at least the modern traveller. It’s time to sail again, so make sure you follow my trip on Snapchat (doina.ciobanu) and Instagram (goldendiamonds), ’cause that’s pretty much the only connection I have with the outside world.

Bali was a lot more different than what I had expected. There are many things about it that I will go through with you on the blog, but I will take it slowly and start from the temples.

Bali is filled with temples, therefore if you don’t have guidance from someone local you might just end up going through the long list online and never making up your mind. While driving through the island I noticed that literally almost every house had one, which really confused me. Our driver, Dana, explained to us that it’s a tradition in Bali to have your family place of worshiping, considering most of the families are quite sizeable and live together; another common phenomenon is one temple shared by a community.

So as I was saying, it’s good to have someone local to recommend what to visit, both in terms of distance and aesthetics, and Dana recommended we see the Batuan Temple. It is quite close both to the Kuta/Seminyak and Ubud area, which are pretty much the most populated places by tourists.

For those of you who have been my readers for a long time know how obsessed I am with Asian temples, going through a cultural orgasm during my trips to both Japan and Thailand (unfortunately I didn’t really get the chance to experience any temples while in China). You can imagine how excited I was to experience my first Balinese temple, it’s always particularly amazing for me to analyse the architectural particularities of a region, understanding the history, the myths of every symbol, colour and material. Batuan was a wonderful introduction to the Balinese culture. When you arrive, the locals taking care of the temple provide you with the sash and sarong and are kind enough to help you figure out how to properly wear them. For those who don’t know, the sash and sarong (what I’m wearing below) is the traditional “outfit” both men and women have to wear when visiting a Balinese temple. I have to admit I was very tempted to buying them later (again those of you who have been following me for a long time know that I’ve got quite an obsession when it comes to traditional clothes), I find the embroidery quite stunning and unique.

The temple itself was quite empty since Dana took us there at about 9 in the morning, which is obviously always nice, who likes queues and other people in their photos haha. Strongly recommend you visit Batuan if you’re in Bali, but make sure you go either in the morning or closer to evening, you don’t want the subequatorial sun burning your brains.

So I am going through the thousands (and I mean more like 30K+) photos from Bali, panicking that with Yacht Week (for those who are not familiar read more HERE) ahead of me it will be quite crazy to edit all the content. Suddenly I scroll down the rows of pictures and see something familiar. That’s right, that was Nice, but I think my blog never actually saw the photos on its pages. Sorry I can’t spend more time chatting, duty calls… And by duty I mean everything but global salvation.

Also just wanted to let you know, as you might have noticed there is something new in my posts which makes my outfits a lot easier to “Shop”. I myself am absolutely in love with that little feature as I think little pictures of items similar to what I’m wearing is way more visually attractive than long boring links. What do you think? x

I was in Bali at the time. Fresh coconuts, sound of the waves hitting the cliffs, sunset kisses, long night walks on the beach. Just like I imagined. At that time I didn’t really know what the reason of me being in Bali was. Yes, work combined with leisure in between, but why was I there? What drove me to Bali but not to Sardinia or Croatia, after all Europe is full of stunning locations and remote beaches.

Then I got an email inviting me to be a part of a beautiful and inspiring movement called #faceforward. The idea is to create and inspire people to live their lives with no regrets, enjoy the moment and reach for their dreams. I absolutely love the idea and wanted to be a part of it straight away, especially considering Clinique is a company I admire and whose products have been on my bathroom shelf for quite a few years. But what did I have to say? And since I was in Bali, a familiar question came to my head: “Why am I here?”

IMG_0623

IMG_0087

IMG_0103

The more I thought about it, the more I was lost in everything the place had to offer. But then I noticed one thing – the more I was posting bikini photos to Instagram, the more people would comment, sending messages asking about my diet and lifestyle in general. That made me realise that the lifestyle was actually the reason I chose Bali. A place that offers fruits in numbers hard to imagine, fruits I’ve never even seen or heard of, as well as vitamin D and fresh air that I very often lack in London. That was it, I needed I body detox, but it wasn’t your ordinary “lose weight” detox type thing, it was a body, soul and spirit detox, that is how my #faceforward journey began.

I’ve talked so many times on my blog and social media about how important healthy living is. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle boosted by healthy food and workouts is what keeps me going, what keeps me healthy and ready to explore the world at any time. I agree with the saying “beauty comes from the inside”, but I think thanks to social media that belief has shifted a little bit and now we understand that what our grandparents missed is the fact that there can be no beauty or happiness in a body we don’t appreciate and treat wrongly.

IMG_0298

IMG_0321

IMG_0311

IMG_0309

IMG_0774

Every time someone asks me what “magic” I do for my skin, I just say: healthy lifestyle and the traditional 3 step cleansing routine, or as I call it the holy trinity of every girl; cleanser, toner and moisturiser. And this is where I think your inner health has to be supplied with some outside boost in order to keep that body beautiful and happy. What I love about Clinique in particular is that it offers different types of products for every skin problem, and you can actually go into a store and ask for advice, because so many of us end up using the wrong products that don’t help. Healthy skin is just such an important part of our lives, it makes us so much more confident and radiating without any touch of makeup. Remember that it’s never enough and it’s never too late, the most important part of it is to keep doing it, even if you want a pizza or a burger from time to time (we all do it), it’s about making healthy your lifestyle rather than a “periodical” thing in order to lose weight or gain muscle.

IMG_0639

IMG_0653

And because going back to London is always painful after a trip like this, I’ve promised myself to continue to #faceforward and keep at least the eating behaviour I developed while in South East Asia, since I can’t do anything about the rest. So you’ll most probably see me at Whole Foods shopping the ridiculously overpriced Papayas and Mangos this summer and searching for bulk strawberries specials online experimenting with new smoothies and recipes (please feel free to share any of the recipes you know with me, I’ll be more than thankful). After all “once you go healthy, you can’t go back”.

Stay inspired and beautiful, lovely ladies.

Love,
Doina x

Travelling has become such a normal part of my life that whenever i hear a friend say “oh, i’ve got a 7h flight, i’m so emotional” i laugh and comfort them, saying I’ve had worst. But then I realize that for some people flying isn’t something as common, so it’s natural to either be scared or confused about how it works, therefore I’ve decided to make a post dedicated just to “the art of surviving long flights”.  Nothing fancy, I don’t fly first or business, so the advice will be applicable to the majority of you!

plane-tricks-small- rule no.1.

Wine, coffee and any other spirits are evil at 10 000m altitude. Forget about the perception that coffee keeps you awake or wine helps you sleep, on a long flight those are the last things you want, unless you enjoy being puffy, tired and jet lagged. Water and only water is your best friend on the plane. Drinking water will keep your body hydrated and boost your metabolism. So if you’ve got a long flight ahead of you, make sure to bring some water with you, like the 1L bottle from Fuji or Evian, the taste of which I absolutely enjoy (update after my latest flight: 2x 1L bottles) … Yes, prepare yourself, you’ll be running to the WC a lot. (this is where exit row on an A380 will be useful… unless of course you’re travelling business or first)

water

- beauty products.

Since the plane doesn’t really offer all the normal conditions for a proper face cleansing procedure, it’s super handy to have something that doesn’t require the use of water. I’m using the face cleansing pads from NIP and absolutely love them. They’re rich in vitamins and contain hyaluronic acid which really hydrates the skin. That way you can cleanse your face without even leaving your seat… And believe me you’ll need it (once you see the pads after you wipe your face you’ll understand why).

After that I’ll normally put on my eye cream against dark circles and puffiness. I have come to the conclusion that I won’t ever use a moisturiser on the plane, just because 1. I’m very paranoid about my hands touching my face (you avoid it with everything else, even the eye cream that comes with a special spatula) 2. I constantly use a 50ml Eau Thermale on the plane and having a moisturiser on makes your skin uncomfortably oily.

Whenever I travel I go for a very natural look, therefore 98% of the time you’ll see me with no makeup on. However, I still always carry a little pouch with my basic makeup that I might use before we land, just so that I look more fresh and good in photos haha. That will usually have my on-the-go liquid Lancome eyeliner (normally I prefer the brush and the gel liner, but that gets messy on the plane); my mini foundation from Clinique which I have just discovered and absolutely adore; my Anastasia Beverly Hills eyebrow kit and about 5 lipsticks… I’ll just include those below.

beauty-

- the sleeping trio: melatonin, eye mask and sound blocking headphones.

I know people who, as soon as they get on a plane, fall into the world of deep Alice in Wonderland dreams. Unfortunately I’m not one of them. I need sound and light blockers (is that even a sentence?).

- clothes.

First of all, forget sexy and feminine, unless you’re flying First Class, all you need to think about is feeling comfortable and not freezing your bum off. That is why warm clothes is the first MUST on a plane (yes, even those thick socks you hate, have them packed in your carry on); lose clothes is the second. And for girls, don’t forget to wear a very comfortable, non pushy or tight bra; you might laugh now, but after 7hours on the plane you’ll start scratching your back and pulling your bra from one side to another… Mmm, you know well how that happens #womenproblems.

Also make sure you bring shoes that are normally a bit bigger. On the flight your feet will get swollen and once you try to put them back on… “Emm, did I accidentally steal some kid’s shoes??”

- bags.

Whenever I travel, be that a short flight or long one, I always need two bags: a normal size and mini one. It just makes my life so much more organised!

Bag No.1 The little bag is comfortable because you can always keep it next to yourself, even in the exit row, so you have permanent access to the things you have pre-planned ot put in it. On my most recent flight to Bali I travelled with the uber cute mini Peekaboo from Fendi, which has two compartments that help easily separate all the little things you carry. My small bag will always have my flight essentials:

small-bag-

Bag No.2  As I’ve previously mentioned, my second bag is a normal sized one, which will fit all the little things I might need (and might not) on the flight. This bag will normally go in the overhead compartment, and because it’s quite a pain to get to, make sure you don’t put things you know you’re going to need a lot. I’ll normally use it about 4 times on a long flight, perhaps taking out my headphones, book, face products, toothbrush, etc.

fendi-peekaboo-travel-style-

-healthy snacks. Bananas, pre-cut mangos, pineapples, apples, carrots, etc are the best snack to prepare for the plane. For some reason, even though the world has clearly taken a path towards healthy eating, airlines still do it the “old way”: salty, faty, wheaty (even if you choose low calorie meal, you’ll still be disappointed). I just feel really bloated and uncomfortable from that, and once I arrive at my destination I can feel how my metabolism has been shaken by that (for some reason my body is very sensitive at 10 000m). That is why having some fruits/vegetables with you is a great way to keep your body working properly.

I think this is pretty much all I had for you. In case I remember something I promise to update you on that… maybe with a video? (i know, i’m so bad at that… new videos coming soon though!)

Hope this makes your next trip a lot nicer and easier.
Kisses,
D xx

When you first meet Frank, it’s hard to decide what you like most about him.

Maybe it’s the smell, maybe it’s the hot babes playing with it on Instagram, or it might be the inappropriate cheeky things he says; anyways, you fall in love with him straightaway. Your relationship might have started long ago, when he was still just roasted coffee beans scrubbing away your unattractive body skin like cellulite or stretch marks, covering all the best Aussie bodies in their showers. If so, high five, because you’ve got a desperate fan of the Frank Body world right here; if you’re in confusion because you don’t yet know who Frank is, hold tight! because it won’t take you long to be obsessed with him too.

Today Frank has broken the Internet once again with a brand new face range that has already managed to conquer my heart (seriously, I need some new supplies…). Creamy, natural and caffeinated, it’s just urging to get “all over your face” in order to make your face smooth and glowing by feeding it with some natural oils like rosehip, coconut, grape seed, almond and olive. (Sorry, i will warn you right now, the smell will be unbearably delicious, but try to restrain yourself from EATING THE PRODUCTS)

Now what do you say, are you joining the #LetsBeFrank revolution, babe?

As the weather gets better my inner 70’s child starts taking over my heart. Crazy platforms, John Lennon sunglasses and most importantly flare jeans; this is the uniform you’ll see me sporting quite often in summer. But nicely fitted wide leg jeans can be very hard to come by nowadays and sometimes I have to search the internet for months before I find that one perfect pair. Well, luckily this year Guess, like the ultimate hero, comes with that amazing Miss Gigi campaign (the adoration towards which I’ve already expressed in a previous post). After constantly checking this jeans out online I decided it was time to get them and step into summer in the best denim of the season, paired with an elegant Matthew Williamson top and somehow (completely accidentally) creating the perfect monochrome combination.

My travels are so fast and so frequent that I end up lost in my photos and ideas and thoughts. Here I am in Monaco and Nice two weeks ago and now I am on the other side of the world, drowning in the Balinese sun while the Indian Ocean waves are tickling my toes.

When your travelling schedule is as crazy as mine, you want to have something that reminds you of yourself, your roots, your personality, otherwise you can get lost in the new overwhelming incredible amount of visual and auditive information. Well, Alice Temperley knows exactly how to make you enhance your style while travelling without losing yourself and that is why I adore her so much. To me she’s the perfect travelling companion, adding various prints inspired by different cultures to the chicest outfits.

Istanbul is one of the most magical cities I have ever been to. It is really absolutely unique in so many ways, and its geographical position on two continents is really reflected in its culture and lifestyle. It’s not like Paris, Rome or Madrid, it is really shifted away from the European style as we know it; but it’s not like Cairo or Tehran; Istanbul is a mix of the best of everything.

It’s not a city for those who look for fancy walks in high heels or champagne on the pier, not at all. It will be noisy, people will constantly come up to you trying to sell something, you’ll step in a puddle while turning around to see what they wanted; you’ll smell rotten fish, you’ll walk through little alleyways and stones will be hanging off old houses, so close to falling. You’ll get lost in translation, you’ll get lost in the echo of each call to prayer, you’ll get  in your thoughts trying to imagine what the old grand city of Constantinople looked like, and that will be the most beautiful type of confusion and wonder. You will love every noise you hear on the streets because each sound will start making sense to you like a separate instrument in a magnificent orchestra.

Today I am only sharing  a photo diary of my trip to Istanbul, just so that you can experience that magic with me, but I’m working hard on a guide of the most interesting things to do there, which will be coming to the blog soon.

Happy [imaginary] travelling! (P.S. I am on my way to Bali now, so make sure to follow my Instagram and Snapchat: doina.ciobanu,  for daily updates)

After a few days of strolling the city while Daniel was all in meetings, the weekend is here and we get to visit some of my already favourite and soon to become favourite places.

Oh yes and I have changed my iPhone cover since then, so no judging please, that’s what happens to the leather ones Apple sell in stores after only 2 months.

So our first stop is the place I had been wanting to go to ever since I came to Barcelona for the first time when I was 8 (wow, that’s quite a long soul relationship I have with this city, isn’t it?). Tibidabo is literally on the top of Barca, opening a stunning view of the Catalan capital.

Coming back into the city we chose to go half the way by bus and the rest walking. That was, most certainly, one of the best decisions we took on that trip since the sunset was absolutely incredible.

On Sunday we met up with my uncle and auntie who live about 30mins drive from Barcelona, in the Montserrat area. And that is where we spent our whole day, followed by an amazing lunch at Vinya Nova, which I’ve written all about in my “Barcelona Local Food Guide”.

I have visited many places in Espana, but Montserrat remains one of my absolute favourite. I still can’t get over how people were building such incredible places on the top of the mountains, with no modern technology.

Our last day we tried to enjoy as much as possible, and I mean AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. In Doina language that is, have a full Menu del Dia at Luzia, then head to the cute dessert shop where everything is made by nuns to enjoy some sweets, then find THAT best Churros place your friends have told you so much about. I mean, just about 3kg of food + wine + coffee, but it’s our last day, right?

And of course, a perfect day can’t end anywhere other than the beach. Why? Well because growing up in a country with no access to the sea, it’s become something extremely special and precious to me.

The End.
(PS. my next travel post will be about my fascinating trip to Istanbul, so make sure to look out for that)

Well, what can i say, nothing can beat crop tops in summer… except maybe bikinis. Yes, bikinis are definitely an even comfier and refreshing way to spend your summer. Alas, that’s not exactly the an “on the go” outfit unless you live in the French Polynesia (now MEGA jealousy for those Instagrammers who do) . But if you’re an occasional city girl like myself, crop tops are the right decision. After all, what do we get that good tan for?

After a day of constant heat, once the breeze starts playing with your hair and the sun sets the clouds on fire through the horizon, it’s time to put on your dance shoes, fancy dress and Parisienne attitude. There is no time for humility or minimalism, we left all of those in London, now we’re here playing a game, the ultimate game of glamour and elegance. With music in the background, wine bottles half empty and stars dancing in the sky.

The new week comes with new excitements. Remember a few weeks ago I shared with you the first part of my Folli Follie SS15 campaign? You guys seemed to have really liked it and that is why today I’m getting back to you with another look I styled for it, as well as an exciting competition!

First of all, this last look is quite different from the other two that you’ve seen, which are more elegant and girlish. Since it was the last shoot we did for the day, and the sun was almost gone, I decided in the evening I wanted to be edgier, darker, hence all the black accessories. As my daddy’s daughter, my main accessory for the night is the Donatella Watch, but I had to somehow smoothen down its masculinity, so I also chose some delicate jewellery to go with it, like the Carma necklaces and bracelet. I would usually skip the bag part in the evening, or go for a clutch, but considering the look is a feminine tomboyish interpretation, the Reflections shoulder bag in… black again! was a comfortable and stylish addition.

Now, the really exciting part. You can WIN my look and become my soul feminine tomboy simply by entering the competition HERE.

Saint Tropez at the beginning of the summer season is like nothing else. The light breeze, the yet to be filled quite streets, the old woman in the corner gelateria calling you for a fresh sorbet, the random jazz you hear while walking the old streets… There is something for every single piece of your soul in Saint Tropez, which is why I love it so much and am sharing with you the second part of my Saint Tropez diaries with River Island. For those who have a free minute, make sure to head to my Postcards From page in order to see more pictures from my trip, awesomely layered by the River Island team (see HERE).

Everyone knows how much I love sharing my travel experiences and especially channeling the vibes of the area I’m travelling to through my style. So when River Island asked me to take part in the “Postcards From…”  from project, I didn’t hesitate for a second and started sketching ideas. However, as experience tells me, when you travel nothing works out or goes the way you want it to, but the improvising and spontaneous decisions you make in those circumstances are exactly what makes travelling so fun!
